Innovative solutions based on the circular economy to reduce raw material consumption in the transport and mobility sector

Indumetal leads the Basque EKOMUGI project (HAZITEK STRATEGIC, 2023), which seeks to close the loop in the life cycles of products such as electric motors, batteries and metallised plastic parts.

Indumetal leads the Basque EKOMUGI project (HAZITEK STRATEGIC, 2023), which seeks to close the loop in the life cycles of products such as electric motors, batteries and metallised plastic parts.

To this end, Indumetal Recycling participates alongside other waste recovery companies (Ecomagnet, Itree and Birziplastik), an industrial automation company (Fegemu), companies with expertise in related manufacturing processes (MIM-TECH and Maier), knowledge agents in the environmental sector (Global Factor) and two end users: a manufacturer of metallised plastic parts for the automotive industry (Maier) and a manufacturer of electric motors for use in different sectors (Obeki). The initiative is complemented by the know-how, technologies and market knowledge of several Technology Centres and Agents of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network (Ceit, Tecnalia, Gaiker, Cidetec, MTC and UPV-EHU).

The EKOMUGI Project focuses on developing innovative technological solutions for the recovery of waste from the transport and mobility sector, closing the loop in the life cycles of products such as electric motors, batteries and metallised plastic parts. These components contain strategic raw materials such as Li, Mn, Co, Nd and REE (rare earth elements), as well as high added-value materials such as Ni and Cu.

The EKOMUGI project has received funding from the Aid Programme to Support Business R&D – Hazitek, an initiative co-financed by the Basque Government and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund 2021-2027 (ERDF).
