Voluntary certification scheme for waste treatment

Indumetal Recycling participates in the European CEWASTE project to develop a voluntary certification scheme for collection, transport and treatment facilities for waste containing valuable and critical raw materials

Indumetal Recycling is one of the 17 entities from 10 European countries working on the CEWASTE project, whose aim is to develop a voluntary certification scheme for waste treatment. Specifically, the project will create, validate and launch the scheme for the collection, transport and treatment facilities of key types of waste containing significant amounts of valuable and critical raw materials, such as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and batteries.

In its H2020 work programme, the European Union set out its objective of moving towards a greener, more sustainable and resource-efficient economy. As part of its strategy to achieve these objectives, the Commission identified a list of critical raw materials (CRM) that require special attention due to their economic importance and higher risk of supply disruption. CEWASTE is addressing these challenges by developing a standardisation process in the secondary raw materials value chain from waste containing relevant amounts of valuable and critical raw materials.

The results of this project will contribute to better-informed policymaking, improved stakeholder accountability, stronger networking between key institutions in the EU and better recovery of raw materials.

Indumetal Recycling will contribute its experience and knowledge in WEEE recycling to carry out a pilot audit at its Asúa-Erandio plant in order to validate the new voluntary scheme developed throughout the project.

This project, which began in November 2018, will run for 24 months. With a budget of €1.9 million, the project is led by the World Resources Forum Association (WRFA) and funded by the European Commission through the H2020 programme.
